How we actually work.

Most advisory firms describe what they sell. Very few explain how they actually work. At Pointer Creek, process matters — not because we love complexity, but because thoughtful planning, accountability, and follow-through are what protect clients from mistakes, missed steps, and conflicts of interest. Here is exactly how our real process works, from the first conversation to long-term partnership.

We don’t buy leads, we don’t run ads, and we don’t sponsor billboards or golf outings. In fact, we maintain a waiting list of people who would like to become clients, only onboarding when capacity and fitment align. This is only possible now, after decades of never compromising our core beliefs or putting our interests ahead those of clients. That said, not everyone finds us through an existing client referral.

Some discover Pointer Creek through careful online research, often after searching specifically for a fiduciary, a CFP® practitioner, or conflict-free advice. When they arrive at our virtual doorstep, they frequently say things like:

  • “I can’t believe you actually publish your fees.”
  • “I can’t believe you’re willing to work on a non-AUM model.”
  • “I can’t believe you’ll just charge me for the planning, with no asset requirement.”
  • “I can’t believe you built me a plan, and the answer wasn’t change everything over.”

We take those comments as signs that, for many clients, it has become unusually difficult to find a fiduciary advisor who will provide unbiased, non-proprietary advice without an automatic expectation of transferring assets or purchasing firm-specific products.

Whether you were referred by a long-time happy client or discovered us after thorough vetting and research, everyone enters the same way, with an introductory meeting.

Every potential relationship begins with an introductory meeting. This is not a sales presentation; it’s a mutual interview. We use this to understand:

  • who you are and what matters most to you
  • what you’re hoping we can help with
  • what success would look like six months, six years, or even decades from now
  • how you prefer to make decisions
  • what kind of relationship you’re looking to build with an advisory firm.

You’re evaluating us — our philosophy, our communication style, and whether you feel comfortable trusting us with your information, your goals, and your family. We’ll provide very candid information about who we are and who we are not.

By the end of this introductory meeting, we commit to giving you:

  • A sense of mutual fit — whether we believe we can truly add value and whether we have capacity to serve you at the level you deserve.
  • An estimate of the time, cost, and complexity involved in moving forward, if we both decide to engage.
  • A clear outline of next steps in the planning process, should we determine to proceed

Some clients have an immediate wealth management or risk management need and come to us wanting a single scenario or need solved, ASAP. If you know you have limited time to process your tax-free rollover and only require fiduciary investment management of your impending rollover, we’ve got you.

If you know your business needs a complex multigenerational entity-purchase funded buy-sell agreement that avoids compounding federal estate tax problems, we’ve got you. In either scenario we’re still leading with the appropriate level of planning. This doesn’t mean we take any longer than non-planning-led firms to satisfy your immediate needs and concerns.

When you hire us for “I know what I need planning” it just means we pause long enough to ask the right questions, that need to be answered, to provide you the best possible outcome.

When you hire us for “I don’t really know what I want or need yet planning,” we lead with planning and complete the full planning process before implementing any fiduciary risk management or fiduciary investment management solutions.

At Pointer Creek, your plan drives your recommendations, not our agenda. Our financial planning process, led by a CFP® professional where appropriate, in plain English looks like this:

Discovery • Data Gathering • Analysis & Modeling • Recommendations • Implementation • Monitoring & Follow-Through

That process is mostly standard for CFP® professionals. What isn’t always standard is adding in:

  • 25 + years of complex-planning experience from the lead planner,
  • comfort working with clients ranging from newlywed couples to $100M+ companies
  • the ability to function as a “CFO for hire” or “outsourced family office” in high-need, high-frequency situations — while still maintaining capacity and quality for every other client.

We intentionally limit the number of new planning engagements we work on at one time. When our active planning capacity is full, we maintain a waiting list rather than dilute the attention given to the families and organizations already engaged with us.

A typical planning engagement may take approximately four to eight weeks, although the timeline depends heavily on the complexity of the work and how quickly the information needed for analysis becomes available. Statements, tax returns, benefit information, estate documents, business records, insurance policies, and other information often arrive in stages.

The objective is not to finish a plan as quickly as possible. It is to do the work thoroughly, ask the questions that need to be asked, and give each engagement the attention it deserves.

We put unusual energy into documentation and follow-through — where many advisory relationships quietly fail.

  • Meeting notes run through secure, encrypted dictation and internal QC.
  • They become structured tasks in our practice-management software.
  • Our operations manager verifies them; the firm reviews them each morning.
  • A $2.5 million family and a $40 million family receive the same checklist-driven care and attention to follow-through.

We don’t leave your financial life to chance, inbox chaos, or someone’s sticky note.

  • Estate-plan implementation & funding. An estate plan does not accomplish much sitting unfunded in a binder. We help clients coordinate ownership, beneficiary designations, trust funding, and other implementation details so the completed planning has a better chance of operating as intended.
  • Estate scenario modeling & testing. We go asset by asset—from the knickknacks to the multi-million-dollar account—and run what we sometimes call a “paper assassination”: a simulated walk-through of what would actually happen under a particular death or incapacity scenario. The objective is to uncover ownership and beneficiary gaps, unnecessary probate exposure, tax considerations, administrative delays, and other problems while there is still time to address them.
  • Deep-dive risk management analysis. With no allegiance to selling insurance, our planning models evaluate both risk retention (no insurance contracts) and risk transfer (including estate- or trust-owned insurance where appropriate), using multiple carriers, structures, and scenarios—comparisons that could “wrap around the conference room.” Our loyalty is to the client outcome, not to any company or policy-production target.
  • Balancing wealth, life, and legacy. We’re not here to tell people to hoard every dollar. It’s not unusual for us to say, “You can afford to spend some of this.” The point isn’t to die with the largest spreadsheet; it’s to live a life—and leave a legacy—that reflects your values.

Pointer Creek is intentionally built to avoid the pressure that can come from quotas, production goals, outside ownership, or debt-driven growth expectations. We do not believe clients should become the raw material needed to satisfy a firm’s growth target.

Our philosophy is closer to Field of Dreams: build something worth showing up for. We focus first on doing excellent work, taking care of the people who have already trusted us, and continually improving the firm. If that earns introductions and attracts other families who value the same approach, growth can follow naturally.

Our incentives are aligned with getting the planning right—not with gathering as many assets or producing as many transactions as possible.

Does this sound like the kind of relationship you’re looking for?

An introductory meeting is a mutual conversation about what you’re trying to accomplish, whether Pointer Creek can help, and what the next step might look like. No pitch. No product. No obligation.
